IMAGE2ILLUSION

A complete free course for creating flat laser-engraved designs that visually appear three-dimensional through a dominant hero subject, a full supporting background scene, layered depth cues, and controlled tonal structure. Projects can be finished as a connected CUTOUT or as a PANEL that remains in its original shape.

Correct definition: the finished piece is physically flat. The “3D” effect is a visual illusion created by the artwork and engraving style. Image2Beam is recommended for preparing the file for professional-quality results and more consistent engraving output.

The

Every project in the course follows the same four-part standard.

01 / HERO SUBJECTOne dominant foreground subject.
02 / FULL BACKGROUNDA complete scene that supports the hero and story.
03 / DEPTH ILLUSIONOverlap, perspective, scale, contrast, highlights, midtones, and shadows.
04 / FINISHING FORMATChoose CUTOUT for a connected silhouette, or PANEL when the finished material remains rectangular, round, plaque-shaped, or otherwise uncut.

15-Minute Quick Start

CORE WORKFLOW

AI generator → tonal source artwork → Image2Beam 3D Illusion → prepared export → LightBurn → physical test → final engraving.

Field-Tested Image2Illusion Workflow

The source image and the laser-preparation step are separate jobs. A visually impressive AI image is not automatically laser-ready.

Correct Workflow

  1. Create the source artwork as a tonal grayscale illusion image with a dominant hero subject, a full supporting background, and clear foreground/midground/background separation.
  2. Do not generate the source as finished black-and-white line engraving art. Heavy outlines, crosshatching, and pre-baked engraving texture can flatten the result and leave too little tonal information for preparation.
  3. Run the tonal source through Image2Beam → 3D Illusion.
  4. Use Image2Beam to analyze and prepare the image for the selected material, laser type, tonal structure, dither, and deployment.
  5. Export the prepared raster from Image2Beam.
  6. Import the prepared export into LightBurn and avoid applying a second dither unless you intentionally want to re-process the image.
  7. Run a small representative material test before engraving the full project.
WHY IMAGE2BEAM MATTERS

The AI image generator creates the artwork. Image2Beam prepares that artwork for laser engraving. LightBurn sends the prepared result to the machine.

Two Image2Illusion Finishing Formats

The 3D illusion comes from the artwork. Physical cutting is optional. Choose the finishing format before writing the prompt or preparing the file.

CUTOUT ILLUSIONHero + full supporting scene + visual depth + one connected outer silhouette. Transparent space surrounds the finished artwork. Best when the chosen material and equipment can safely perform the final cut.
PANEL ILLUSIONHero + full supporting scene + visual depth + a composition designed to live naturally inside the finished panel. No CUTOUT structure silhouette is required. The panel itself remains rectangular, round, plaque-shaped, or otherwise uncut.

Choose the Format by Material and Equipment

SituationRecommended FormatReason

Separate cutting equipment is availableCUTOUT optionalThe artwork can be cutout-ready even when engraving and cutting are performed by different equipment.
IMPORTANT

“Cutout-ready” describes a design format, not a requirement for every Image2Illusion project. Never assume an engraving laser can cut the chosen material.

Design Before Image2Beam Checklist

Complete this visual check before software preparation. A weak composition cannot be repaired by settings alone.

QuestionPassWhat Good Looks Like
Is there one obvious hero subject? The eye goes to one main subject immediately.
Is there a full supporting background? The scene feels complete rather than empty or decorative.
Are there at least three visual depth planes?Foreground, midground, and background read separately.
Does the hero overlap the scene? The hero visually projects forward rather than floating independently.
Does the background remain subordinate? The background supports the story without competing with the hero.
Is the tonal structure readable?Highlights, midtones, and shadows define form clearly.
Is the finishing format selected?Choose CUTOUT or PANEL before preparation.
If CUTOUT: can the design remain one connected silhouette? No accidental floating islands or fragile unsupported parts.
Are the edges correct for the selected format?CUTOUT: transparent outer area preferred. PANEL: composition intentionally fits the panel boundaries.
Will the detail survive at final size?Important shapes remain readable without relying on micro-detail.
GO / NO-GO RULE

If the hero, background, depth structure, or selected finishing format fails, revise the artwork before moving into Image2Beam.

20-Module Complete Course

MODULE 01

What Image2Illusion Actually Is

Lock in the correct definition before designing anything.

  • Image2Illusion is a flat laser-engraving style that creates the visual illusion of depth and dimension.
  • Every design uses one dominant hero subject, a full supporting background scene, and a selected CUTOUT or PANEL finishing structure.
  • The finished piece is still physically flat. The dimensional look comes from composition, tonal structure, overlap, perspective, and engraving style.
  • It is not true 3D carving, a depth map, stacked layered art, or an isolated subject floating on an empty background.
KEY TAKEAWAY

Hero subject + full supporting background + illusion depth styling + the correct finishing format: CUTOUT or PANEL.

MODULE 02

The Hero Subject

Build the foreground subject that carries the entire design.

  • The hero subject must be the first thing the viewer sees.
  • It should visually project forward from the scene through stronger contrast, overlap, scale, and edge clarity.
  • The pose should be readable and dramatic enough to carry the composition.
  • Do not bury the hero in background detail or make several equal subjects compete for attention.
KEY TAKEAWAY

If the viewer cannot immediately identify the hero subject, the design is not ready.

MODULE 03

Building the Supporting Background

Create a complete scene that supports the hero instead of leaving dead space.

  • The background must tell the story of the subject: barbershop, firehouse, graveyard, workshop, western town, kitchen, battlefield, garage, etc.
  • Use architecture, props, floor/ground planes, furniture, tools, landscape, and atmosphere to make the scene feel complete.
  • Background detail should become quieter as it recedes so the hero remains dominant.
  • Empty backgrounds and random decorative filler weaken the 3D illusion.
KEY TAKEAWAY

The background is not decoration. It is part of the depth structure.

MODULE 04

Foreground, Midground & Background

Use scene layers to make a flat engraving feel spatial.

  • Foreground elements can overlap the hero or frame the lower edge of the design.
  • Midground elements connect the hero to the setting.
  • Background elements establish distance and scene context.
  • Use size changes, overlap, perspective, and reduced contrast to create recession.
KEY TAKEAWAY

Think in three visual planes even though the physical engraving remains flat.

MODULE 05

Overlap & Perspective

Create depth without actual carved geometry.

  • Objects in front should overlap objects behind them.
  • Perspective lines, floor planes, roads, counters, shelves, fencing, and architecture help establish distance.
  • Large near objects and smaller distant objects reinforce the illusion.
  • Do not use impossible perspective that makes the scene feel assembled from unrelated clipart.
KEY TAKEAWAY

Overlap is one of the strongest depth cues available in a flat engraving.

MODULE 06

Highlights, Midtones & Shadows

Use tonal structure to create the illusion of raised and recessed form.

  • Highlights make surfaces feel closer or more exposed to light.
  • Midtones create rounded form and transitions.
  • Shadows create recess and separation, but should not become featureless black blobs.
  • Maintain enough tonal information for the laser to reproduce the illusion.
KEY TAKEAWAY

The goal is readable form, not maximum darkness.

MODULE 07

Choosing CUTOUT or PANEL

Match the artwork structure to the intended finished product and equipment.

  • Plan the outer silhouette while composing the scene, not after the engraving is finished.
  • Use architecture, ground, furniture, branches, smoke, props, rails, or framing shapes to connect major elements.
  • Avoid floating islands and fragile unsupported slivers.
  • The silhouette itself should look intentional and reinforce the subject.
KEY TAKEAWAY

A great engraved scene that falls apart when cut out is not a finished Image2Illusion design.

Background & Edge Preparation

Background handling depends on whether the project is a CUTOUT or PANEL illusion.

CUTOUT Illusion

  • No solid outer background rectangle around the artwork.
  • Transparent PNG is preferred for raster export.
  • The hero and supporting scene must form one CUTOUT structure-ready composition.
  • After LightBurn import, confirm that a solid rectangular raster background does not surround the design.

PANEL Illusion

  • The project remains a panel, plaque, tile, metal blank, or other finished shape.
  • The artwork does not need to form a connected outer silhouette.
  • Compose the hero and supporting scene naturally inside the panel boundaries.
  • A full-panel background is allowed when it is intentional artwork, not an accidental export box.
  • No final cut path is required unless the maker independently chooses to trim the panel.
LIGHTBURN CHECK

Before engraving, confirm the imported file matches the intended finishing format. A CUTOUT should be isolated from the outer background; a PANEL should intentionally use its panel boundaries.

MODULE 08

Choosing Strong Source Artwork

Start with artwork that can support a hero, scene, depth, and cutout.

  • Prefer artwork with a clear focal subject and usable tonal separation.
  • Look for compositions that can support a full scene rather than an isolated portrait alone.
  • Strong directional lighting and readable shapes usually work better than flat lighting.
  • Reject sources that are too cluttered, too low-resolution, or dependent on color instead of form.
KEY TAKEAWAY

Starting with a strong source image saves more time than trying to repair a weak one.

MODULE 09

Image2Beam 3D Illusion Workflow

Use Image2Beam as the recommended preparation tool.

  • Load and size the source artwork.
  • Choose the intended material, laser type, and depth style.
  • Analyze 3D suitability before committing to the final preparation.
  • Review editable tonal starting values, dither recommendations, material preview, and File Deployment.
KEY TAKEAWAY

Image2Illusion teaches the design method. Image2Beam is recommended for professional-quality preparation and more consistent results.

MODULE 10

Reading Suitability Analysis

Use the analysis to decide whether the artwork is worth continuing.

  • Review the overall suitability score.
  • Pay attention to tonal range, midtone coverage, and clipping.
  • A strong score does not replace visual judgment; it supports it.
  • If the artwork fails visually as a hero + scene composition, software analysis alone cannot rescue it.
KEY TAKEAWAY

Suitability is a decision aid, not permission to ignore composition.

MODULE 11

Tonal Preparation in Image2Beam

Adjust without destroying the illusion.

  • Brightness, contrast, gamma, sharpening, and dither recommendations should be treated as controlled starting points.
  • Make one meaningful adjustment at a time.
  • Protect highlights, preserve midtones, and avoid crushing shadows.
  • Overprocessing can make a dimensional design look flatter.
KEY TAKEAWAY

More contrast is not automatically more depth.

MODULE 12

Dither Review

DO NOT DOUBLE-DITHER

If the Image2Beam export is already dithered, import that prepared raster into LightBurn without applying Jarvis, Stucki, or another dither a second time. Double-dithering can damage the tonal structure Image2Beam prepared.

Translate tonal structure into a raster the laser can reproduce.

  • Inspect whether the hero still reads clearly after dithering.
  • Check that shadows contain structure and highlights remain distinct.
  • Zoom out to judge perceived depth, not just pattern texture.
  • A visually interesting dither is useless if it destroys the subject's form.
KEY TAKEAWAY

Judge dither by form preservation, not by pattern name.

MODULE 13

Laser Type Strategy

Match preparation to the real machine.

  • Select the actual CO₂, diode, or fiber laser before finalizing the workflow.
  • Different laser types and optics reproduce fine structure differently.
  • Do not assume settings or detail expectations transfer directly between machine types.
  • Use Image2Beam's laser-aware workflow as a starting framework.
KEY TAKEAWAY

The target laser must be part of the preparation decision.

MODULE 14

Material Response

Understand why the same file can look different on different surfaces.

  • Materials vary in contrast, texture, burn response, and tonal range.
  • Smooth materials may preserve fine raster structure better than coarse surfaces.
  • Some materials move quickly from light to dark and give less tonal latitude.
  • Always test on the actual material type intended for the project.
KEY TAKEAWAY

A screen preview is not a material test.

MODULE 15

Resolution, DPI & Spot Size

Keep detail within the machine's physical capability.

  • A high-resolution file cannot force the laser to reproduce detail smaller than its spot size.
  • Choose detail density for the actual engraved size.
  • Too much fine texture becomes noise and can flatten the illusion.
  • Optimize for readable physical form, not a large pixel count.
KEY TAKEAWAY

Professional results come from matching the image to the machine, not from chasing numbers.

MODULE 16

Calibration & Test Engraving

Prove the file on material before committing to the finished piece.

  • Use representative scrap or a controlled test area.
  • Change one machine variable at a time.
  • Label each test and compare from normal viewing distance.
  • Keep successful tests as references for future projects.
KEY TAKEAWAY

Random tweaking teaches almost nothing; controlled comparison builds repeatability.

MODULE 17

Troubleshooting Flat Results

Diagnose where the illusion was lost.

  • If the result looks flat, re-check source composition, hero dominance, and midtone preservation.
  • If shadows become black blobs, inspect clipping and physical overburn.
  • If highlights disappear, the raised-looking planes lose definition.
  • If the raster looks noisy, simplify the source or reduce excessive sharpening/detail.
KEY TAKEAWAY

Fix the dominant failure first instead of changing every setting at once.

MODULE 18

From Test to Repeatable Production

Document the complete workflow once it works.

  • Record the source type, material, laser, engraving size, Image2Beam choices, and machine settings.
  • Save the successful prepared file and finished engraving photo.
  • Note any material-specific behavior.
  • Use this record to make the second successful engraving easier than the first.
KEY TAKEAWAY

A professional workflow is repeatable, not lucky.

MODULE 19

Using the 100-Point Design Grading System

Grade the design before wasting material.

  • Hero Subject: 20 points.
  • Supporting Background: 20 points.
  • Illusion of Depth: 20 points.
  • Laser Engraving Readiness: 20 points.
  • Finishing-Format Construction: 20 points.
KEY TAKEAWAY

A design can still fail automatically if it has no hero, no meaningful background, no depth illusion, or no usable CUTOUT structure.

MODULE 20

Capstone Project

Complete one full professional Image2Illusion project.

  • Select or create a strong hero + full supporting scene.
  • Plan the CUTOUT structure silhouette.
  • Run the artwork through Image2Beam's 3D Illusion workflow.
  • Complete a physical test engraving, adjust deliberately, cut the final piece, and photograph the finished result.
  • Document the original image, prepared file, dither preview, settings, and final finished project.
KEY TAKEAWAY

Course completion means you can repeat the process intentionally—not just produce one lucky result.

Laser Engraving Starting Settings & Troubleshooting

These values are starting points for test engravings, not guaranteed production settings. Laser wattage, lens, spot size, focus, machine calibration, material batch, coating, and desired image size can all change the result. Always test on the actual material before engraving the finished Image2Illusion piece.

How to Use These Settings

  1. Choose the table that matches the laser type.
  2. Start near the middle of the recommended range.
  3. Run a small representative test using the same material as the final project.
  4. Change one variable at a time.
  5. Judge the result from normal viewing distance: hero separation, midtones, background recession, and overall depth illusion matter more than microscopic detail.
IMPORTANT

These are engraving/image-marking starting points. Cutout settings should be developed separately for the exact material thickness and machine.

CO₂ Laser — Typical 50–80 W Starting Points

Speeds are shown in mm/s. Use one pass unless noted otherwise.

CO₂ MINIMUM FIRING POWER

Glass-tube CO₂ lasers have a minimum stable firing threshold that varies by laser tube, power supply, controller, and machine. A controller may accept a low power percentage even when the tube will not produce a stable engraving beam at that setting. Determine your own machine's lowest reliable engraving power before using this table. The 80 W OMTech used for the Image2Illusion course samples does not engrave reliably below approximately 18% power. On a machine with an 18% minimum, use speed as the main control when a lighter engraving is needed.

MaterialSpeedPowerDPI / IntervalAir AssistImage2Illusion Notes
Birch plywood220–350 mm/s15–28%254–318 DPI / 0.10–0.08 mmLow / optionalGood tonal range. Too much power quickly darkens midtones and can flatten the illusion.

Cherry / darker hardwood220–340 mm/s14–24%254–300 DPI / 0.10–0.085 mmLowStart lighter because the natural wood tone already adds visual density.
Laser-compatible white or pre-painted MDF — 80 W OMTech course sample350–500 mm/s18–24%254–300 DPI / 0.10–0.085 mmLowRecommended first test: 450 mm/s at 18% power, 300 DPI, 1 pass. Painted / coated metal250–450 mm/s15–28%254–318 DPI / 0.10–0.08 mmOff / lowGoal is coating removal or contrast change, not deep metal engraving.
Cast acrylic — engraving250–420 mm/s12–24%254–300 DPI / 0.10–0.085 mmLowCast acrylic generally gives a frosted mark. Avoid overpacking lines.
Vegetable-tanned leather250–400 mm/s10–20%200–254 DPI / 0.127–0.10 mmLowUse conservative power; smoke and dark edges can erase delicate tonal structure.

Power percentages are not universal wattage values. Two CO₂ lasers with the same rated wattage can have different firing thresholds and material response. Use the table as a test starting point, not as a machine-independent recipe.

Diode Laser — Typical 10–20 W Optical Starting Points

Speeds are shown in mm/min. Diode machines vary greatly, so test early and often.

Fiber Laser — 20 W to 60 W Galvo Starting Points

FIBER FINISHING FORMAT

For typical 20–60 W galvo fiber marking systems, use the PANEL Illusion format for compatible metal projects unless a separate appropriate cutting process is available. The fiber laser can create the visual illusion without physically cutting the artwork into a silhouette.

These are general image-marking starting ranges for compatible metal surfaces. Fiber results vary significantly with lens, source type, frequency range, pulse width, focus, hatch spacing, material finish, and whether the machine is standard Q-switched or MOPA. Start conservatively and run a material test before using a finished Image2Illusion design.

MOPA NOTE

MOPA fiber lasers add pulse-width control. Pulse width can significantly change color, heat input, and surface response. Treat it as a separate test variable instead of copying standard Q-switched settings directly.

60 W CAUTION

On a 60 W fiber laser, it is very easy to use too much energy and destroy midtone separation. For Image2Illusion work, start faster and lower in power than you would for deep engraving, then increase energy only if the image is too light.

Before You Engrave the Final Piece

  • Clean optics and verify focus.
  • Use the exact material type planned for the final piece.
  • Confirm the hero subject still dominates at the final physical size.
  • Confirm the background supports the scene without becoming equally dark.
  • Check that the outer cutout silhouette remains connected and structurally practical.
  • Save the successful test settings with the project for future repeatability.

Source-Image Prompt Standard

Generate a tonal source image first. Image2Beam should perform the laser preparation.

Recommended Source Prompt Structure

Create a grayscale Image2Illusion source image with a strong hero subject in the foreground and a complete supporting background scene. Build convincing visual depth using overlap, perspective, scale, controlled lighting, shadow separation, foreground/midground/background structure, and clear tonal hierarchy. Preserve broad grayscale tonal areas and readable shapes for later laser preparation. Do not render the source as finished line engraving, crosshatched scratch art, dithered bitmap, halftone, product mockup, physical relief, or stacked-layer artwork. The source will be prepared for laser engraving in Image2Beam.

Then Choose the Finish

CUTOUT: the final artwork also needs a connected outer silhouette and transparent surrounding area.

PANEL: the artwork remains naturally composed within the panel or blank and does not require a connected cutout silhouette.

Master Prompt Templates by Finishing Format

CUTOUT Prompt Ending

Design the complete hero subject and supporting scene as one connected cutout-ready silhouette. Keep transparent space around the outside of the finished artwork. Do not place the design inside a solid rectangular background or decorative panel. Avoid disconnected floating parts, fragile bridges, stacked layers, physical relief, product mockups, text, logos, and watermarks.

PANEL Prompt Ending

The finished project will remain a flat panel and will not be cut out. Compose the dominant hero subject and full supporting background naturally inside the panel boundaries. Create convincing visual depth through overlap, perspective, scale, contrast, tonal separation, and foreground/midground/background structure. Do not create a cutout silhouette, stacked layers, physical relief, product mockup, text, logos, or watermarks.

Common Prompt Failures & How to Correct Them

Image generation can drift away from the Image2Illusion format. Use these corrections when the first result misses the target.

FailureWhy It Hurts the DesignAdd This Correction
Hero subject is too smallThe background becomes the main subject.“Make the hero subject dominant and visually forward, occupying the main focal area of the composition.”
Background is emptyThere is no full scene to create depth.“Include a complete supporting environment with foreground, midground, and background elements.”
Looks like actual 3D sculptureThe result is no longer flat illusion artwork.“Keep the artwork physically flat; create dimensionality only through composition, tonal structure, overlap, and engraving style.”
Looks like layered papercraftPhysical depth is being simulated with separate stacked pieces.“Do not use stacked layers, exploded layers, or paper-cut construction.”
Looks like a product mockupThe generator shows a finished object instead of usable artwork.“Output artwork only, not a product mockup, display stand, room scene, frame, or photographed finished object.”
Disconnected floating partsThe final finished project cannot remain one physical piece.“Connect all major elements into one cutout-ready silhouette using ground, architecture, props, branches, smoke, furniture, or structural bridges.”
Too much micro-detailFine noise will disappear or become muddy during engraving.“Use medium-high controlled detail with strong readable shapes and reduced micro-texture.”
Background competes with heroDepth hierarchy collapses.“Reduce background contrast and detail so the hero remains the strongest visual element.”
Flat clipart lookThere is no dimensional illusion.“Use overlap, perspective, scale variation, tonal recession, edge emphasis, and clear three-plane depth.”
Unwanted text or logosText may be wrong and branding can distract from the scene.“No text, labels, logos, watermarks, signs with readable wording, or brand marks.”
Solid black background boxLightBurn may engrave the entire rectangle and the cutout silhouette becomes harder to isolate.“For CUTOUT: use transparent space around the connected design. For PANEL: intentionally compose the artwork inside the finished panel boundaries.”

Material Reality: Test the Surface, Not Just the Name

“White MDF,” “coated MDF,” and similar labels are too broad to predict engraving behavior. The surface coating and the substrate underneath determine the final contrast.

White MDF / White-Faced MDF

  • Use laser-compatible white MDF or pre-painted white MDF that has been tested to produce a dark, high-contrast engraving.
  • Do not assume generic laser-compatible white or pre-painted MDF will work. Some coatings simply burn away and expose light brown MDF underneath, producing weak contrast.
  • Sublimation-coated MDF is not the reference material for this course. A sublimation coating is designed for heat-transfer printing, not necessarily for a dark CO₂ laser mark.
  • Before a full project, engrave a small tonal sample and confirm strong dark marks and usable midtones.

Raw MDF

  • Raw MDF can darken under a CO₂ laser, but the result may still be brown/gray and lower contrast than a properly chosen white laser surface.
  • Use it only after a small test proves the tonal range is strong enough.

Black Slate

  • Plain black slate is a strong PANEL Illusion test material because the laser usually creates a lighter mark against the dark surface.
  • The image polarity must match the material response. A light-mark material may require inverted/negative preparation compared with dark-mark wood or MDF.
  • Test plain black slate before coated slate because it introduces fewer coating variables.

Sublimation-Coated Black Slate

  • This can be tested as a PANEL project, but the coating changes how the laser interacts with the surface.
  • Treat it as a separate material profile and do not copy plain-slate settings without testing.
MATERIAL RULE

Approve a material only after a small test confirms the contrast, tonal range, and physical finish needed for the illusion.

Final Pre-Production Checklist

Complete this before committing the final material.

CheckReady
Artwork passes the Image2Illusion design checklist.
Final physical dimensions are correct.
Correct laser type and wattage are selected.
Correct material is selected and test sample matches the final material.
Focus and lens are verified.
Optics are clean.
Test engraving is approved.
Hero still dominates after dithering and test engraving.
Background remains supportive rather than equally dark.
If CUTOUT: cut path is verified and separated from engraving detail. If PANEL: no cut path is required unless independently needed.
Finishing format is confirmed: CUTOUT or PANEL.
If CUTOUT: no disconnected islands or fragile cutout sections remain.
Edge treatment matches the format: CUTOUT is isolated; PANEL intentionally fills or fits its finished boundaries.
Successful settings are saved with the project.
